ケプラーの第二法則から、公転速度が最も早くなる日である。
日本時間で午前3時半ということはその時およそ正午であるのは西経102.5度付近である。
近日点通過日の頃は南回帰線上でほぼ南中高度が90度近いはずなので、南回帰線と 西経102.5度の経線との交点付近が地球上で一年の中で最も太陽に近づける場所だと 思われる。残念ながらN23.44,S102.5はチリの沖合3260kmあたりのようだ(Powered by Google)。

元旦の初日の出よりは近日点通過日の南中のほうが天文学的に意味付けられるに値する イベントである。
